Tutoring
Our organization has a partnership with the congregation of Fiesta Cristiana, a Latinx church based in Apex, NC. Fiesta Cristiana and the Apex United Methodist community of faith churches founded Semillas de Unidad in 2016 to provide tutoring resources for the children in the congregation. UNC students formed an official partnership with the leaders of Semillas de Unidad in December 2020, and since then nearly 50 students have volunteered as tutors. We hope to continue this partnership for years to come and build a long-lasting connection between UNC-Chapel Hill and the congregation of Fiesta Cristiana. Anyone can sign up to volunteer as a tutor regardless of Spanish language skills!
Fundraising
Another way we serve is by raising money for local organizations that work with the Latinx community. Our fundraising in Spring 2021 went towards providing Chromebooks for children who are being tutored through the Fiesta Cristiana "Semillas de Unidad" tutoring ministry. Club members can get involved in fundraising by attending benefits and other fundraising events, working at food stands at home sports games through Eats2Seats, posting about the club on social media, or applying for the fundraising committee to work behind the scenes to plan events.
Community Outreach
The community outreach aspect of SdU provides members with opportunities to volunteer at local events/donate to drives organized by pre-existing organizations such as El Centro Hispano or Fiesta Cristiana. Students can apply to join the Outreach Committee to help organize student sign ups and send out information about volunteer opportunities each week.
The community outreach branch also works to review research related to language barriers and the way that people are affected by them in their daily lives. The Emotional Wellness committee aims to raise awareness of the prevalence of language barriers and how they affect all of our lives.
Spanish Conversation Practice
As a community of both native and learning Spanish speakers, practicing conversation in a comfortable fun setting is an important part of this club! Spanish conversation hours are held weekly and are an opportunity for members to gain confidence speaking and build friendships!
Members of SdU at UNC can also apply to be a part of the publicity committee, which is in charge of updating the website, publicizing events around campus, and running our Instagram!
